Day 48: 10/23/06

Ben tricked Joe into thinking that white-washing this picket fence in downtown Hannibal was fun. Joe doesn't read signs very well.

Hannibal, MO was a natural stop for us on the way to the gulf. Mark Twain was born here and piloted a paddleboat on the river for 5 years. His stories chronicle life on the Mississippi and serve as inspiration to river rats everywhere. We are no exception.

Hannibal, although touristy, has a certain hometown feel about it. We'll definitely be back. Thank you Mr. Clemens!

Our favorite Mark Twain quote: "Don't let schooling interfere with your education."

Joe & Ben,

You are truly inspiring! Despite the light heartedness and 'good' humor of your blog, all of us that are following your grand adventure know that this trip requires a lot of hard work, motivation and dedication to a cause as well as careful planning and decision making. It is obvious you care deeply about the Great River and encourage all of us to learn about and support the conservation organizations that are working to improve its health. In honor of your trip and inspirational goals, I have made a donation to each of the conservation organizations you provided a link to on your website.

May the spirit of the River continue to flow through you!

Stay strong fellas, and be careful out there. Great blog and photos!

The river gets sort of wild once you get below St. Louis. Give me a holler if you need any more info on the Mississippi or Atchafalaya rivers.

I LOVE your blog, nephews. You guys are hilarious (but that's not news!) and I'm also learning a ton. I hope it's going well--I think about you every day!

Keep the faith!
Love & tofurkey,

Hi Joe and Ben. We met at Hannibal's Java Jive. I'm the guy that informed you of the REI in St. Louis. I hope you found your way there. I know that caboose camp well. I see you noted passage through Wolf Lake in MN. I lived on Wolf Lake during the time I lived in Bemidji. Did you make camp in the pool below Hannibal? That's a beautiful pool isn't it? Nice note on the church bus on the river. I wonder how it ended up there? I'd be interested to know more precisely where it is. Is it below the Quincy Lock and Dam? I'm glad you enjoyed Hannibal. My decendants were river rats too. My original relation in Hannibal was a riverboat Pilot,Moses Bates. He was the first to pilot the upper Missippi into Iowa, or so it's told. As an engineer he also platted Hannibal and opened the first General Store. It's always a thrill for me to meet river travelers who enjoy their visit in Hannibal, and who love and strive to protect this big river. I hope to speak with you again in the future. Whenever you're through here again, feel welcome to call. One of you has my number. Until next time.
Bill
