Day 55: 10/30/06

Before entering the city of St. Louis, we had to pass through the Chain of Rocks Canal which safely ferries all river traffic around a low-head dam which spans the river after its confluence with the Missouri. The current picked up noticeably after that point.

At the end of the shipping canal stood the final lock of our trip, #27. Have we really gone through THAT many? It's beginning to all seem like a blur.

Greeting us on the St. Louis riverfront were two actual adventurers. Lewis and Clark returned from a successful survey of the west exactly 200 years ago. Don't they know it's easier to go downriver than up?

A couple different views of the arch. We were thankful to make it to St. Louis when we did. The winds picked up to 35mph that afternoon. We could feel the arch swaying in the wind. It wasn't as scary as paddling through St.Louis' barge-packed waterfront.

Hi kiddos!

The whole family is thinking about you on your journey. We kind of wish we were there too. (But not for the cold, wind and mud.) It's been cold here too. We hope it gets warmer where you are.
Your dad told me to tell you that the Gophers won, they beat Indiana something like 63 to 26.
Our prayers for safe travels are with you always. We look forward to your return. Love you lots! OXOX
