On August 26, 2006, Joe and Ben Palmquist will paddle out of Lake Itasca, the headwaters of the Mississippi River, with hopes of becoming Brothers for the River. Over the ensuing three months, we will travel all 2,552 miles of the Mississippi River by canoe in hopes of bringing awareness to the critical issues that face the river today. We will spread our message through this website, our blog, media coverage, and talking to as many people as possible along our trip.
The section of the river between St. Louis and Cape Girardeau was fairly industrial. We were told to watch out for a number of cement plants (pronounced SEE-ment) along the water's edge. 
Not only is there industry along the water, Ben and I were thrilled to find this Illinois State Penitentiary. We decided to paddle on.
